Take the 2-minute test →The test also checks comprehension: a speed only counts if the meaning came with it.
The method
Three steps, taught by a course with 49,000+ students
Speed Readingo follows Abdullah Yılmaz’s speed reading course. Each step has a lesson, a drill and a place in the app.
Pre-reading
Spend a few seconds on headings, bold words and anything that stands out. You see the structure and you get curious.
2Reading with your eyes
Turn the inner voice down, make fewer stops per line and hold a steady pace with RSVP and pacer drills.
3Marking
At the end of a paragraph, tie what matters to a vivid picture, then keep it with short notes and flashcards.

Questions people ask
What is speed reading?
Speed reading is a set of techniques for reading faster than your usual pace: previewing a text, saying fewer words in your head, making fewer stops per line and holding a steady pace. Done well, it trades a little detail for a lot of time, so the skill is choosing when to use it.
Does speed reading work?
Partly. Training can raise your pace, but comprehension tends to slip as speed climbs; in one study course-takers went from about 280 to 400 words per minute while comprehension fell from 81% to 74% (Rayner et al., 2016). That is why every drill here comes with a comprehension check.
What is a good reading speed?
For adults reading non-fiction silently, 175–300 words per minute is typical and about 238 is the average across 190 studies (Brysbaert, 2019).
Is Speed Readingo free?
The app is free to download on iPhone and Android, with an optional Premium subscription inside the app. Everything on this site is free: the test, the drills and the lessons.
